GNFS cautions public against negligence as Christmas and harmattan approach

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has cautioned the public against negligence and unsafe practices that could trigger fire outbreaks as the country approaches the Christmas festivities and the harmattan season.

Assistant Divisional Officer One (ADO I), Joshua Kugblenu, said carelessness, ignorance and accidents remained among the major causes of fire outbreaks, urging households and businesses to adopt preventive measures to protect lives and property.

Speaking in an interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM’s morning show, Adekyee Mu Nsem, hosted by Nana Dogbe, Mr. Kugblenu explained that fire requires three essential elements — fuel, oxygen and heat — warning that when these elements combine, they can quickly result in devastating incidents.

He advised the public to switch off electrical appliances before leaving their homes and avoid charging mobile phones overnight. He also urged households to monitor their devices while charging and disconnect them once fully charged.

On electrical safety, Mr. Kugblenu stressed the importance of engaging certified electricians to undertake electrical installations, cautioning against the practice of hiring unqualified technicians because of their comparatively lower charges.

He further advised households to ensure that refrigerators are properly positioned to allow adequate ventilation and prevent overheating.

Mr. Kugblenu also cautioned the public against leaving food preparation unattended, particularly where children are involved, and urged vehicle owners to undertake regular maintenance checks to identify faults that could trigger fires.

He encouraged households and businesses to acquire appropriate fire extinguishers, stressing the need to consult fire officers to assess their premises and recommend the suitable types of extinguishers.

The GNFS officer also urged the public to prioritise personal safety during fire outbreaks rather than recording videos for social media. He said people should contact the Fire Service promptly and provide accurate directions to enable emergency responders to reach affected locations without delay.

He reminded the public that the Ghana National Fire Service could be contacted on 192 or 112 during emergencies.
