ACCRA, Ghana, 8th September: President John Dramani Mahama has assured athletes and practitioners of various sporting disciplines that government will expand financial support beyond football when the Sports Development Fund becomes fully operational.
The President said Ghana must broaden its approach to sports development by investing in disciplines such as athletics, boxing and other sports where the country has considerable talent and potential.
He made the remarks when Medeama SC, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies Football Club paid a courtesy call on him at the Presidency.
President Mahama said football had traditionally received significant attention and financial resources, but stressed that other sporting disciplines also deserved deliberate investment.
“Beyond football, we must also develop talent in athletics, boxing and the other sporting disciplines,” he said.
According to him, the operationalisation of the Sports Development Fund would provide an avenue for government to channel resources into the development of those sports.
The President said the objective was to ensure that talented athletes across the country received the support and facilities needed to develop their abilities and compete successfully.
He noted that investment in sports should not be limited to football, arguing that Ghana had the potential to excel in several sporting disciplines.
President Mahama also linked the broader sports investment agenda to government’s plans to improve sporting infrastructure across the country.
He said the construction of new stadia would complement financial interventions and create facilities where athletes and sports teams could train and compete.
The President expressed confidence that sustained investment in sports development would help Ghana discover and nurture the next generation of sporting stars.
