ACCRA, Ghana, 8th September: President John Dramani Mahama has announced financial support totalling GH¢684,000 for Medeama SC, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies Football Club for their participation in continental football competitions.
The support is being provided through the Sports Development Fund to assist the three clubs representing Ghana in continental competitions.
Speaking when the clubs paid a courtesy call on him, President Mahama said Medeama SC would receive GH¢342,000, equivalent to US$30,000.
Nations Football Club will receive GH¢228,000, equivalent to US$20,000, while Ampem Darkoa Ladies Football Club will receive GH¢114,000, equivalent to US$10,000.
President Mahama said the financial support formed part of government’s efforts to assist Ghanaian clubs participating in continental competitions.
He commended the three clubs for winning championships in the domestic league and earning the opportunity to represent Ghana on the African stage.
The President urged the clubs to perform strongly and help restore Ghana’s reputation in continental club football.
He acknowledged that the teams would face formidable opponents but expressed confidence that they could overcome the challenges ahead.
President Mahama also announced plans to expand government investment in sporting infrastructure across the country.
He said allocations had been made in the 2026 budget for the construction of ten new stadia, including facilities in the Oti, Western North, Ahafo, Bono East, Savannah and North East regions.
Beyond football, he said government would also invest in athletics, boxing and other sporting disciplines when the Sports Development Fund becomes fully operational.
President Mahama urged the clubs to make the most of the support and represent Ghana with distinction on the continent.
He expressed the hope that their performances would help rekindle national pride in Ghanaian club football and enable the country to once again receive international recognition for its football clubs.
