ACCRA, Ghana, 8th September: President John Dramani Mahama has called for deliberate government and stakeholder support for women’s football, arguing that Ghana’s female footballers have recently delivered more international success than their male counterparts despite receiving fewer resources.
President Mahama said Ghana had achieved greater success in women’s football, with the country’s female teams winning more trophies than the men.
He made the remarks when Medeama SC, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies Football Club paid a courtesy call on him ahead of their respective continental campaigns.
The President expressed concern over what he described as discrimination against women’s football, noting that more financial resources and attention have traditionally been directed towards men’s football.
According to him, the quality of the team’s presentation demonstrated the competence and potential that exist in women’s football.
“In the spirit of affirmative action, we must deliberately support women’s football and help bring the women’s teams up,” President Mahama said.
He stressed that women’s football deserved greater investment, given the achievements Ghanaian women have recorded on the international stage.
President Mahama also commended Ampem Darkoa Ladies for representing Ghana in continental competition and urged the club to continue its pursuit of excellence.
He said greater investment in women’s football would help develop more talent and create opportunities for Ghanaian female players to compete successfully at the highest level.
