NDC Communicator Criticises Bawumia, NPP Over Economic Record and Political Conduct

By Andy Koranteng

ACCRA, August 18, 2026 — A member of the NDC Communications Team in Tema West, Chris Asher Jnr, has criticised former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), questioning their economic record and political conduct while in government.

Speaking to Citizen Kofi Owusu on the Morning Show, Adekyɛɛ Mu Nsem, on Ahotor 92.3 FM, Mr Asher Jnr described Dr Bawumia as an “ivory tower economist”, arguing that although the former Vice President could explain economic theories extensively, he had struggled to translate them into practical solutions.

Mr Asher Jnr also made claims about Dr Bawumia’s alleged involvement in efforts to assist Zimbabwe with its economic challenges, alleging that the intervention failed to produce the desired results. The claims were made during the interview and have not been independently verified.

Turning his attention to the NPP, Mr Asher Jnr argued that the party had changed significantly from what he described as its former image as an “elite party”.

He questioned whether some current members of the party could serve as positive role models for young people, citing what he described as inflammatory rhetoric and insults from some NPP politicians.

He specifically mentioned former NPP Chief Whip Annor Dompreh and former Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, criticising what he described as their public political rhetoric.

On the economy, Mr Asher Jnr accused the previous NPP administration of leaving Ghana with significant economic challenges, alleging that corruption contributed to the difficulties confronting the country.

He further accused the NPP of failing to show sufficient remorse for the state of the economy after leaving office and referred to the party as the “Non-Patriotic Party”, a political characterisation of the NPP.

His comments form part of the continuing political debate over Ghana’s economic management, governance and the competing visions of the country’s two major political parties.

The allegations and criticisms expressed by Mr Asher Jnr represent his views and were not independently verified. The NPP and the individuals mentioned were not quoted in the interview excerpt provided as responding to the allegations.
