Second Lady Samira Defends Bawumia’s Borrowing Mantra

Samira Bawumia, wife of the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says her husband’s critique of the Mahama government’s borrowing when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was in opposition has been taken out of context.

The Vice President has recently come under fire after justifying the NPP government’s rate of borrowing.

Dr. Bawumia had said the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) would continue on its current trajectory of borrowing to help grow the Ghanaian economy.

He however, clarified that the NPP would borrow responsibly and not recklessly, which he regularly accused the Mahama administration of doing.

“A lot of people misunderstand when we say we are going to be responsible, it doesn’t mean that we are not going to borrow money, it only means that we are going to borrow responsibly and not recklessly.”

The Minority has since described the justification as deceitful.

However speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show  [Wednesday] Samira Bawumia described the Minority’s critique as unfair, adding that her husband was taken out of context.

“He’s being mischievously misquoted or taken out of context. He never said do not borrow. Never did he say do not borrow. What he said was responsible borrowing and borrowing in a sustainable way. It is in those contexts. I do not want to get into the numbers, the economics, I am not in government so I do not purport to speak for government but that was his position. It is about responsible borrowing and in a sustainable way.”

Dr Bawumia and some members of the NPP, while in opposition, criticised the Mahama government for having a voracious appetite for foreign loans which they claimed had catapulted the country’s debt stock to unsustainable levels.
