Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress [NDC], Koku Anyidoho has lauded Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Ocquaye, for his remarks on legalizing same-sex marriage in Ghana.
Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has maintained that homosexuality is a form of deformity, which when given special attention, can be ‘cured’.
The renowned academic who has threatened to give up his job as head of the legislature should Parliament consider any attempt to legalize homosexuality, explained that deformity comes in many forms hence persons identified as homosexuals should seek the right medication.
According to him, mental deficiency, physical deficiency, psychological deficiency, are human limitations which cannot turn into a human right for which homosexuals in anti-gay nations should be fighting for their legalization.
“I wouldn’t dispute that because deformity takes many forms – It can be mental deficiency, physical deficiency, psychological deficiency, whatever deficiency.” Prof Mike Oquaye said on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana.
But speaking on Accra-based Neat FM, Mr. Anyidoho saluted Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, for making such a bold statement.
According to him, his former boss Late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills was courageous enough to snub similar requests from former UK Prime Minister, David Cameron.
However, Koku is doubtful the President’s responses will be what Ghanaians look forward to.
“The speaker has struggled to say he won’t because Nana Addo is not being straightforward with the issue and that is why I salute Prof Mike Oquaye for his bold remarks. I’m even sure that is why he has run away to the UK, he is only dodging the question but we all wait to see”, he said.
Homosexuality is found throughout the African continent but out of the 55 states recognised by the African Union, the International Gay and Lesbian Association say as at 2015, homosexuality was outlawed in 34 African countries.
