The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed that government is yet to formally adopt the revised curriculum for learners from Kindergarten to Primary Six, developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA).
Mr Iddrisu said the proposed curriculum is currently being reviewed by the Ghana Education Service (GES) after NaCCA presented it to the Ministry of Education last month. The review, he explained, will be followed by consideration by Cabinet before the curriculum can be formally adopted and implemented.
Speaking at the 73rd anniversary celebration of Great Apam Senior High School in the Central Region, the Minister said the proposed curriculum seeks to move basic education beyond classroom learning by placing greater emphasis on moral values, character building, problem-solving, critical thinking and analytical skills.
He said the revised curriculum will also introduce emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), electronics and digital learning at the basic education level.
Mr Iddrisu said the initiative forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda and is intended to equip learners with relevant knowledge and skills from an early stage to prepare them for the changing demands of society and the world of work.
According to the Minister, once the GES completes its assessment, the proposed curriculum will be submitted to Cabinet for approval. If approved, the Ministry will work with relevant agencies, including the GES and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, to implement the new curriculum.
Meanwhile, Mr Iddrisu announced plans to upgrade Great Apam Senior High School from Category B to Category A, as part of efforts to expand access to quality secondary education.
He also assured the school of government’s commitment to working towards completing abandoned GETFund projects at the school to provide additional infrastructure and facilities to support effective teaching and learning.
In addition, the Minister announced plans to provide Great Apam Senior High School with a bus to help address some of its transportation needs.
