The Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Director of elections, Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo has commended the outgoing Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah for his firm stands against the legalization of homosexuality in the country.
The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah warned government that any attempt to legalise homosexuality in the country will be met with a fierce resistance.
According to him, if pressure from the West for the country to legalise homosexuality continues, he will lead thousands of his congregants on a nationwide demonstration to fight the government.
Speaking at the church’s 43rd General Council Meeting on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, Apostle Onyinah said “the call to legalise homosexuality, LGBT, by some leaders of the Western world must be seen as neo-colonialism and must be condemned at the highest level. We do not accept this as an aspect of civilisation.
“Africans must see ourselves as people who are matured and know what is good for us and our people. The church in Ghana will continue to reject and oppose this and we are prepared to demonstrate against this if pressure continues to mount on our leaders,” he added.
The UK Prime Minister Theresa May told African leaders attending the Commonwealth heads of government meeting in London recently that it is wrong for homosexuals to be persecuted for their sexual orientation.
According to her, the UK government was willing to help other African countries reform their laws and embrace homosexuality.
Speaking on Ahotor FM Morning Show on Thursday 3rd May, 2018 with Onantefour Addae Mununkum, the Vice Chairman emphasised that the country’s values and morals will not be sold simply for financial support or assistance.
“I am noted as a good organiser for demonstrations in the country and I will offer myself voluntarily just to help in the demonstration”
“This is what we want from our religious leader and one of the voices of reasoning with such a huge respect has spoken. I believe we should take it with all seriousness” He stated.
He further stated that the speech from the religious leader should send a clear signal to Ghanaians that we are not ready for the legalization of homosexuality.
Ofosu-Ampofo went on to state that the president of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo should categorical come out clear on his personal stands as the leader of the nation on the subject of homosexuality.
He believes that the president’s personal opinion will put a lot of weight on the country’s stand on legalization of LGBT.
“President John Evans Atta Mills and President John Mahama spoke against the legalization of homosexuality in the country and we expect our current president to do same. Opoku Onyinah has spoken well, we will join him for the nationwide demonstration against Homosexual invasion should it arise in the country”
“This call I believe will motivate other religious groups to come out so strongly and speak against their action. I want to personally commend Apostle Professor Opoku Oyinnah for his bold step to reject any action by any group to impose this unacceptable act on our society” He concluded
