The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has ordered the indefinite closure of Obuasi Secondary Technical School following a violent incident in which the school’s headmaster was allegedly assaulted by a group of students.
The decision was taken after tensions on the school’s campus escalated into violence, prompting security agencies to intervene to restore calm and protect lives and property.
According to reports, the unrest was triggered by allegations circulated among some students that the headmaster had been seen burying a fetus in a nearby bush. The students further alleged that the fetus was linked to an alleged abortion involving a student. These claims have not been confirmed by the authorities, and investigations are ongoing.
The Ghana Police Service has since arrested six students in connection with the alleged assault on the headmaster and the destruction of school property. Reports indicate that three staff bungalows, vehicles and other valuable property were vandalised during the incident.
The Municipal Assembly said the closure is a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring the safety of students, teaching and non-teaching staff, while preventing any further disturbances as investigations continue.
The condition of the headmaster has not been officially disclosed. However, he is reported to have received medical treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital following the alleged attack.
Police are continuing investigations into both the assault and the allegations that triggered the unrest.
