The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) says it has taken swift action following the circulation of a viral video showing individuals processing smoked and salted (dried) fish under unhygienic conditions.
According to the Authority, similar incidents have occurred in the past, prompting it to work closely with relevant state agencies to protect public health and ensure food safety. The FDA noted that it has an ongoing public education programme aimed at promoting safe and hygienic fish processing practices across the country.
The Authority said that after the latest video surfaced, it immediately deployed a rapid response team to the location on Monday, July 27, in collaboration with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly and the Ghana Police Service to assess the situation and take the necessary enforcement measures.
As part of the operation, the team confiscated fish that had been exposed to unhygienic processing conditions to prevent the products from reaching consumers. The fish processors involved were also educated on the public health risks associated with poor handling and processing practices.
The FDA further announced that, together with its partner institutions, it will intensify engagement with fish processors and fishmongers in the affected districts to promote good hygiene practices and strengthen compliance with food safety standards.
The Authority has advised the public to purchase smoked and dried fish only from reputable and hygienic sources, carefully inspect fish before buying, and avoid products that appear contaminated. Consumers are also encouraged to wash smoked or dried fish thoroughly before cooking and ensure it is properly cooked before consumption.
The FDA urged members of the public to report any suspected unhygienic food processing, storage or sale to the nearest FDA office or their respective Metropolitan, Municipal or District Assembly.
The Authority assured the public that, in collaboration with the relevant agencies, unsafe fish products and operators who fail to comply with food safety regulations will be removed from the market. It added that both public education and enforcement activities will be intensified to safeguard public health and maintain confidence in the country’s food safety system.
The FDA also appealed to the public to remain calm and continue observing recommended food safety practices while it implements the necessary measures to protect public health. It encouraged the public to use its official reporting channels to report unhygienic food handling practices or any activity that could compromise public health and safety.
