The Vice Chairman and Director of elections for the opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for special protection for legislatures in the country.
Following the attack on the Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, Hon. Eric Opoku and some members of the NDC on Sunday, by some thugs purported to be members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The incident happened at about 2am on Sunday, April 1, 2018, making it the second time such an incident has happened in Mr. Opoku’s residence.
The names of the three injured persons have been given as Thomas Amponsah, Adams Seidu alias Red and Apostle Timothy.
The Police command has since arrested two people in connection with the attack.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Morning show with Onantefour Addea Mununkum, Mr. Ampofo stated that the attacks by these hooligan on people within the constituency has been continuous and devoted interest to bring peace within these communities should be of interest to government.
“Government should take steps to bring peace within the area; people are taking advantage of their governments in power and are taking the law into their own hands”
“I believe the IGP should act now and give adequate protection to our members of Parliament. I endorse it. It will not out of place if members of parliament are given protection. A special case study is what happened to our brother J.B Danquah. I believe his death would have been avoided if he had special protection”
“A well trained policeman should be given to our legislatures for their personal protection”, he emphasized.
Ofosu-Ampofo further stated that the country will incur more cost when a Member of Parliament dies in organizing by-elections and burial than that which will be spent on paying the police for their safety.
He also stated that the government should pay particular attention to the Asunafo South constituency to in order to bring peace and tranquility.
