The Former Mayor of Accra and Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije has called for the release of NDC deputy general secretary Koku Anyidoho from the grips of the Criminal Investigations Department at the Police Headquarters in Accra.
Oko Vanderpuije, speaking to journalists Wednesday morning called for his release saying, ” He should be released now. What has he said that cannot be compared with what has been said in the past. Our leaders have to judge matters by the trend of affairs. With what is going on, people can get upset to the extent that they will speak their minds.
“But you should know that Koku Anyidoho is not a military man. He does not command the military and as such cannot organize a coup d’etat. You can read meanings into what he said but don’t read more than what he says on the surface,” he added.
Koku Anyidoho arrested
Koku Anyidoho was on Tuesday arrested for claiming that there will be a civil coup d’etat against the Akufo-Addo government in the coming days.
His comments which were made in an interview on Happy FM attracted condemnation from government with NDC General Secretary Asiedu Nketia isolating himself and the party from the stated position.
“There’ll be a civil revolt. There’ll be a people’s movement. During President John Mahama’s tenure didn’t we receive similar threats from the likes of Let My Vote Count and OccupyGhana”.
He added: “There’ll be a civilian coup d’etat; there’ll be a social revolution and the movement is starting on Wednesday. He [Akufo-Addo] will be fed up at the Presidency.” Koku Anyidoho opined in the interview Monday.
After his arrest, Prime News can confirm that a number of police officers stormed his residence in search of documents or equipment in connection with his “treasonable” comment.
The heavily armed Police officers, however, met a virtually empty apartment upon their arrival at the residence of Deputy General Secretary Koku Anyidoho.
Meanwhile, his lawyer Victor Adawudu has confirmed that Koku Anyidoho has been charged with treason adding that the police will release him soon.
