Free skill training and apprenticeship by the Ghanaian-German Centre
Youth unemployment has become a national canker and so is the illegal migration of the youth through unapproved routes, especially the Sahara, for economic gains and better living conditions in Europe and other countries.
The existence of associations such as the Unemployed Graduates Association and the recent inhumane treatment of some migrants in Libya, are warnings that if nothing is done (and done soon enough), about unemployment and illegal migration, they will become obstinate and incurable, corroding the very core of our peace and security.
And it is in light of this that the most result oriented youth program on radio: Mmebunu Mmere on Ahotor FM, seeks to find answers and solutions to. Speaking to Mr Akyena Brantuo, on Saturday 3rd February on how their Centre is providing support in helping curb the youth unemployment and migration, Mr David Tetteh, National Coordinator, Ghanaian-German Centre for Jobs, Migration and Reintegration said the main mandate of their outfit is to provide advisory services and support on jobs, migration and reintegration.
According to him, the Centre, which is a partnership project between the Ghanaian and the German governments and was commissioned by the German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeir on Dec 13, 2017, provides assistance for Ghanaians in search of vocational and skills trainings, and employment opportunities as well as offers unique opportunities and networks to the youths.
He said though commissioned few months ago, they have counseled over 100 youths and the centre will soon receive a number of migrants that they would support and reintegrate into the society.
An advisor at the Ghanaian-German Advisory Centre, Mr Kwaku Yeboah, on his part said the Centre, in partnership with other organisations and institutions provides apprenticeship and skills training opportunities to the youth. The Centre foots the cost of the apprenticeship or the skill training and in some instances, helps in establishing the beneficiaries after their training (apprenticeship). The individual, however, is required to arrange for his/her own transportation and feeding.
“The support for the vocational and the skills training is not limited to only those in Accra but across the country,” Mr Yeboah added. He therefore advised the youth to contact the Centre regardless of their geographical locations in order to take advantage of this great initiative.
On migration, Miss Angela Odai, also an Advisor at the Ghanaian-German Advisory Centre, stated that to break the myths surrounding migration into other countries, the Centre aside providing job opportunities to the youths, also provides advisory services on migration to Ghanaians who want to do proper migration to Germany and other countries and also, offers counseling for returnees who need support with reintegration into the society.
Mr Eric Opoku Ware, Coordinator, Savannah Hustlers Association, who himself was an illegal migrant to Libya, bewailed how a lot of the illegal migrants died on the desert without the knowledge of their families.
The Centre is situated in the building of the GNAT Heights, Independence Avenue. The officials therefore call on the youth all over the country to take advantage of this great apprenticeship and skills training opportunities which is geared at making them economically and financially sound.
