TEMA, Ghana, 28th May: The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called on Ghanaians to exercise restraint and maturity in response to the recent xenophobic attacks on Ghanaian citizens in South Africa.
His comments come after the first batch of about 300 Ghanaians returned home from South Africa following attacks reportedly targeted at fellow African nationals by some South Africans.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Thursday Class segment on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Thursday, May 28, Abraham Koomson cautioned against any form of retaliation against South Africans living in Ghana.
According to him, the anger of Ghanaians should not be directed at innocent South African nationals residing in the country, but rather at the South African government, which he said has failed to maintain law and order.
He stressed that no responsible government should allow such attacks and acts of violence against fellow Africans to persist within its borders.
“Ghanaians must show maturity and avoid retaliation. The issue is with the South African authorities who appear to have lost control of the situation, not ordinary South Africans living in Ghana,” he stated.
Abraham Koomson further called on the African Union (AU) to intervene decisively to address the growing tensions and attacks against African migrants on the continent.
He warned that the dream of African unity and continental integration would remain unattainable if African countries continue to tolerate xenophobic violence against one another.
“If the African Union fails to act, the vision of continental unity and cooperation that Africans continue to preach about will not become a reality,” he added.
