Don’t Take Ghanaians’ Mandate for Granted — Kusi Poku Cautions NDC

The Executive Director of the Good Governance Advocate Group Ghana, Listowel Kusi Poku, cautioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against complacency following its strong performance in the 2024 general elections. He disclosed this on the morning show “Adekyee Mu Nsem” on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra

According to Mr. Kusi Poku, the overwhelming support garnered by the NDC and its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, reflects the confidence Ghanaians have reposed in the party as a beacon of hope for the country. He stressed that such a massive endorsement should not be taken for granted.

“The mandate given to the NDC by Ghanaians is significant, and party members must not take it lightly. If they do, it could work against them in the future,” he stated.

Mr. Kusi Poku further emphasized that former President Mahama has been the central figure behind the party’s growing appeal, arguing that no individual within the NDC can solely claim credit for its current popularity among voters.

Touching on internal party dynamics, he noted that while every individual aspiring to contest for the NDC flagbearership has the constitutional right to do so, the interest of the party must always come first. He stressed that the NDC as an institution is bigger and more important than any single candidate or presidential ambition.

He also expressed concern about the possible impact of internal political contests on governance. According to him, when government appointees begin focusing on future flagbearership ambitions while still occupying public office, it can negatively affect effective governance.

“This situation can impede progress, as individuals may shift their attention from their official responsibilities to their political ambitions,” he explained.

Mr. Kusi Poku therefore advised that any party member intending to contest for the NDC flagbearership should resign from their current government position and fully concentrate on their campaign activities. He believes this would help prevent personal ambitions from undermining effective governance and service delivery.

His remarks add to the growing national conversation surrounding party discipline, governance, and leadership direction within the NDC as the party looks toward the future.
