Use the Courts, Not Media Pressure — Lawyer Advises NPP on Abronye Case

A private legal practitioner, Gideon Tettey Tetteh, has criticised the approach adopted by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in reacting to the arrest and detention of Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

Speaking on Adekyee Mu Nsem on Ahotor FM with host Citizen Kofi Owusu, Lawyer Gideon stated that matters before the courts must be handled through proper legal procedures rather than media pressure, insults, or political campaigns.

According to him, “the law lies in the bosom of the judge,” stressing that if any party is dissatisfied with a court ruling, the appropriate course of action is to pursue an appeal through the legal system instead of organising press conferences or petitioning the diplomatic community.

Using the case of Nana Agradaa as an example, he explained that her lawyers did not resort to media attacks or public campaigns when she faced legal challenges. Instead, they continued pursuing appeals through the courts until they secured relief for their client.

He also cited the case involving Abu Trica, noting that his legal team recently filed a fresh application to quash the criminal charges against him rather than relying on public sympathy.

Lawyer Gideon argued that insulting judges while simultaneously seeking bail from the same courts is counterproductive and could negatively affect the case.

He therefore advised the NPP to focus on legal remedies such as appeals rather than what he described as “needless press conferences” and petitions to members of the diplomatic corps.

According to him, if the opposition intends to politicise the matter, it should state so openly, but using public pressure as a strategy to secure bail for Abronye is “a bogus and useless strategy.”

He maintained that public sympathy does not determine court decisions and urged the party to respect the judicial process and allow the law to take its course.

Lawyer Gideon further advised the NPP to learn from the legal approaches adopted in the cases involving Nana Agradaa and Abu Trica by following the proper court procedures if it genuinely seeks to secure the release of Abronye DC.
