MahamaCares Will End ‘Death Sentence for the Poor’ – President Mahama

President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, will help provide lifesaving treatment for thousands of Ghanaians suffering from chronic diseases.

Addressing delegates at the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, Switzerland, President Mahama described the initiative as a “lifeline” for patients battling non-communicable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular conditions, liver disease, and renal failure.

According to him, many poor families previously viewed such illnesses as a death sentence because of the high cost of specialised treatment.

“This fund is a lifeline for those suffering from non-communicable diseases that were previously a death sentence for the poor,” he said.

President Mahama stressed that specialised and high-cost healthcare should not become a privilege reserved for only wealthy citizens.

“MahamaCares is ensuring that specialised, high-cost care is not a privilege for just a few, but a right for all,” he added.

The President noted that the establishment of the fund formed part of Ghana’s broader efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and reduce inequalities within the health sector.

He also reiterated Ghana’s commitment to achieving health sovereignty through increased domestic investment in healthcare, local production of medical supplies, and improved healthcare financing.

President Mahama disclosed that Ghana’s 2026 budget had committed GHS 34 billion to the health sector while expanding healthcare coverage to about 20 million people nationwide.

He further called on global leaders to prioritise practical investments in healthcare systems rather than focusing only on conferences and policy declarations.
