The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region is building an ultra-modern regional party office to honour the memory of the late Okyeame Baffour Osei Akoto for his valuable contribution to the formation of the party.
The office will also have a conference hall that could hold national programmes such as the extraordinary delegates conference that took place in Kumasi last Sunday.
The office will be named after Okyeame Baffour Osei Akoto in recognition of his role in multi-party democracy in Ghana and particularly to birthing the NPP. Okyeame Baffour Osei Akoto, a chief linguist to Otumfuo, is also the father of the current Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto.
Chairman
Delivering his welcome address in English to the admiration of all delegates at the Extraordinary National Delegates Congress of the party at the Heroes Park of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium last Sunday, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako, otherwise known as Chairman Wuntumi, said the party in the region needed an office that befitted its status as the stronghold of the party.
Chairman Wuntimi, who hardly speaks on any platform, shocked the gathering when he greeted in English and started acknowledging all the dignitaries in the English language. Initially, some of the people thought that as usual, the regional chairman would continue his delivery in his native tongue, Twi, but that was not to be.
He stated that work had already begun on the office complex located in a prime area in the regional capital and paid glowing tribute to the Chief of Agric Nzema, Nana Akwasi Boadu Nkansah Ayeboafo, for his immense contribution to the project.
General Secretary
The Acting General Secretary of the party, Mr John Boadu, said the extraordinary national delegates’ congress was a continuation of what was started about a year ago in Cape Coast: the amendment of the national constitution of the party.
He said because the proposals were many, a committee was constituted to compile these amendment for adoption by congress.
The congress, therefore, was to complete the amendments and fine-tune the new constitution of the party.
Deadline
Mr Boadu, however, announced the end of December as the deadline for the registration of party members who wish to vote and stand for election.
He said anyone who failed to meet the deadline would not be eligible to stand for election or be a delegate at any of the party’s elections in the coming year.
He asked all party faithful to register at the polling stations where they resided as the polling station registers would be used for all internal elections.
