The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) says the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, and others government officials who visited the Kumasi Academy (KUMACA) following the Swine Flu outbreak at the facility put their lives at risk.
“We condemn the manner in which the life of the President of the Republic, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other citizens were endangered by their visit to the school without the necessary measures being instituted. We recommend that due diligence should be done at all times including consultations will all needed professionals in subsequent events of this nature to forestall any future occurrence,” the GMA said in a statement.
Seven students have died from either the H1N1 virus or meningitis with the latest incident recorded at Tempane SHS, where a student has died from a suspected case of meningitis.
KUMACA incident, where four students died from H1N1, sparked fears across the country, prompting the President’s visit to the Ashanti Region based school.
The incidents have been blamed on congestion at secondary school campuses following the commencement of the Free SHS programme.
In a statement on the scourge of the viral diseases, GMA urged the government to set up at least two National Infectious Disease Centres, “one in the southern sector and the other in the northern sector to facilitate prompt diagnosis, service delivery, research and teaching.”
