Climate Action Is an Investment, Not Charity – Climate Minister

ACCRA, Ghana, 6th May; The Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu, has declared that climate change is no longer merely an environmental issue but a pressing national development challenge that demands coordinated action, strategic partnerships, and sustainable financing.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series held at the Presidency on Wednesday, May 6, the Minister outlined key achievements and priorities of his office, emphasizing efforts made over the past year to strengthen Ghana’s climate governance framework.

“Over the past year, the office has focused on building the architecture, governance systems, partnerships, and investment pipelines to advance Ghana’s climate agenda and strengthen our global credibility. The year ahead promises to deliver on the foundations laid already,” he stated.

Looking ahead, Mr. Issifu highlighted a set of strategic priorities aimed at accelerating climate action and unlocking funding opportunities.

These include increasing the volume of funded climate programmes, advancing the accreditation of national institutions to directly access international climate funds, and scaling up renewable energy and climate-resilient infrastructure.

He also stressed the importance of developing bankable climate projects, deepening Ghana’s participation in carbon markets, and strengthening monitoring, reporting, and transparency systems to enhance accountability and effectiveness.

“Our long-term objective is to position Ghana as a regional leader in climate resilience, sustainable industrialisation, and climate-smart investment,” he added.

The Minister underscored that climate action should be viewed as a strategic investment rather than a charitable effort.

“Climate action is not a charity. It is a strategy, an investment in Ghana’s future stability, resilience, and prosperity. The office remains committed to ensuring that Ghana is not simply a recipient of climate support but a proactive partner, shaping solutions and advancing sustainable development,” he said.
