ACCRA, Ghana, 27th April: The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has constituted a high-level technical team to investigate the recent fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) substation at the Akosombo Dam.
The incident, which severely disrupted operations, resulted in the loss of approximately 1,000 megawatts (MW) of power, contributing to ongoing power interruptions across the country.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series at the Presidency on April 27, Dr. Jinapor disclosed that the investigative team will be chaired by renowned engineer, Ing. William Amuna, and tasked with conducting a thorough and independent probe into the incident.
“To get to the root cause of this incident, as Minister for the sector, I have constituted a technical team chaired by the venerable engineer William Amuna to undertake a comprehensive and independent investigation,” he stated.
According to the Minister, the team will focus primarily on the technical aspects of the fire and is expected to submit its findings within two weeks.
“They will concentrate on the technical issues and present a report within two weeks. I am also aware that the security agencies are carrying out a parallel investigation to determine any issues of culpability or criminality, and we await their findings as well,” he added.
Dr. Jinapor assured Ghanaians of government’s unwavering commitment to restoring stability in the power sector as swiftly as possible.
“Let me assure Ghanaians that we remain fully committed to restoring normalcy within the shortest possible time,” he emphasized.
He also commended engineers and technical teams who have been working tirelessly to restore power supply, often under demanding conditions.
“I have been briefed that the engineers are working around the clock this week, and I intend to visit them tonight to thank and encourage them. I wish them the very best and I am confident they will rise to the challenge,” he said.
