The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has commended John Dramani Mahama for the launch of Ghana’s Free Primary Health Care Programme.

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Dr. Ghebreyesus praised the initiative, noting that it marks a significant step toward universal health coverage in Ghana.

“I congratulate the President of #Ghana, @JDMahama, and Minister of @mohgovgh, @KMAkandoh, on the launch of the Free Primary Health Care (FPHC) initiative. This important milestone brings Ghana closer to achieving Universal Health Coverage” he wrote.

He further emphasized the critical role of primary healthcare in improving national health outcomes.

“Strong primary health care is essential to improving population health, enabling earlier detection, timely treatment, and more effective disease prevention” he wrote.

President Mahama officially launched the landmark Free Primary Health Care Programme on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at the Shai Osudoku District Hospital in the Greater Accra Region.

The initiative is aimed at expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare for all Ghanaians.

The programme represents a major step in strengthening Ghana’s primary healthcare system and advancing the country’s commitment to universal health coverage.

According to the President, a key pillar of the initiative is prevention, with a strong focus on early detection and treatment of illnesses before they become severe.

The Free Primary Health Care Programme is expected to significantly reduce barriers to basic healthcare particularly at the community level while reinforcing Ghana’s broader commitment to equitable and inclusive health delivery.
