A Ghanaian High Court has delivered a ruling that is already sparking widespread conversation across the country, dramatically reducing a staggering GHS50 million divorce claim to a GHS300,000 lump sum in the high-profile case involving millionaire businessman Richard Nii Armah Quaye and his ex-wife, Joana.
The couple, who tied the knot in 2010, saw their 15-year marriage end in a heated legal battle that captured public attention. At the center of the dispute was a massive financial claim by Joana, which the court ultimately found to be excessive and unsupported by evidence.
Presiding over the case, Justice Justin Kofi Dorgu made it clear that marriage should not be treated as a financial investment. In a strongly worded judgment, he emphasized that financial settlements in divorce must be grounded in fairness and necessity—not opportunity for massive gain.
According to the ruling, Joana had already received a significant portion of the matrimonial assets, including a one-third share of their home. In addition, the court ensured that Richard Nii Armah Quaye would continue to cater for their children’s education and healthcare, alongside addressing other needs.
The judge also highlighted Joana’s ability to sustain herself, noting her employment and experience gained from the couple’s business ventures, particularly within the Quick Credit space. He expressed confidence that she has the capacity to thrive independently post-divorce.
In what many are calling a landmark statement, the court noted that the decision was also intended to discourage divorces driven by expectations of large financial rewards.
The case has stirred intense debate on social media and radio discussions, with many weighing in on whether the ruling sets a new tone for divorce settlements in Ghana.
Meanwhile, Richard Nii Armah Quaye remains one of Ghana’s most prominent entrepreneurs, with a reported net worth of around $800 million. Known for his luxury lifestyle and influence in the financial sector, his personal life has now become just as much a topic of national discussion as his business empire.
This ruling has reignited conversations about marriage, money, and what fairness truly means when love comes to an end.
