Wydad fan passes away after Champions League triumph

A young Wydad Athletic Club fan passed away during his team’s 1-0 win over Al Ahly in the final match of the CAF Champions League on Saturday in Stade Mohammed V.

The 23-year-old fan reportedly suffered a heart attack in the stands after the 70th minute when Wydad scored their first goal through Walid El Karti who headed in Bencharki’s deflected cross past Ekramy. WAC managed to snatch the title after winning 2-1 on aggregate.

Civil protection forces found it hard to reach the fan as the stadium was crowded with supporters everywhere including stairs which were supposed to be always clear of supporters in case of emergencies. After being taken to the intensive care unit, the fan died on the next morning on Sunday.

With this win, WAC managed to conquer Africa for the first time since 1992 when they last won the championship defeating Al Hilal of Sudan 0-2.
