Learning activities in the Ejura Township in the Ashanti region have come to a close as students have been lined up by the street for hours in expectation of President Akufo-Addo, who is visiting the area today.
Teachers and their students have abandoned their classrooms and are waiting by the roadside for the President, who is yet to leave Accra.
The President is going to the municipality to mark the 37th World food Day, and also attend the official launch of the infrastructure for poverty eradication programme (ipep) warehouse.
The development comes as some Ghanaians have raised concerns on social media over the manner in which pupil in public schools are made to stand in the sun for several hours to welcome dignitaries.
On Monday, scores of pupil were lined up on the streets of Accra as President Akufo-Addo and his Ivorian counterpart took a drive through some principal streets of the capital.
Meanwhile, the Public relations officer of the Ghana Education Service Rev. Jonathan Betteh has downplayed concerns over the several hours pupil are made to stand in the scorching sun to wave at the dignitaries.
“If the act is something so bad, the Regional Director of the GES wouldn’t have allowed that to happen. I do not see why we should seek permission from parents before taking them out to wave at dignitaries. There is no policy against children waving at visiting Presidents when they are in town. I honestly do not see anything wrong with the school children lined up to wave at a visiting President, I don’t think it is a big deal,” he stated.
