LISTEN: Minority Must Not Oppose Policies Just Because They Are Called Opposition – Abraham Koomson

TEMA, Ghana, 7 March: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has criticised the Minority in Parliament for what he describes as a tendency to oppose government decisions simply because they are in opposition.

According to him, the role of the Minority should not be reduced to opposing every policy introduced by the government.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, March 7, Mr. Koomson argued that if the Minority continues to oppose policies without constructive alternatives, they risk losing credibility.

He suggested that the term “opposition” should not be interpreted as a license to reject every decision taken by the government.

Abraham Koomson cited the recent controversy surrounding the reduction in the cocoa producer price as an example of what he described as politically motivated criticism.

On February 12, the government announced a reduction in the cocoa producer price to GH¢41,392 per tonne, equivalent to GH¢2,587 per bag, for the remainder of the 2025/2026 crop season. The decision was approved by the Producer Price Review Committee (PPRC).

Following the announcement, the Minority in Parliament indicated plans to compel the Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, to appear before the House to address what it described as worsening challenges in the cocoa sector.

The Minority argues that the new pricing structure could negatively affect cocoa farmers and further strain livelihoods within the industry.

However, Mr. Koomson dismissed the criticism, insisting that the Minority’s reaction lacked merit.

According to him, the issue has been politicised, with some members using it as an opportunity to revive what he described as their “dwindling political fortunes.”

He therefore urged members of the Minority to focus on constructive engagement rather than opposing policies purely for political advantage.
