Tennis: Accra Professional Ladies Open Returns After Hiatus

After a three-year hiatus, the Accra Professional Ladies Tennis Tournament—now known as the Accra Professional Ladies Open (APL Open)—has made a highly anticipated comeback, bringing an exciting all-female professional competition back to the Ghanaian capital.

The event is scheduled to take place from March 3 to March 8, 2026, in Accra, played on outdoor clay courts at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club.

This marks the fourth edition of the tournament, which was previously referred to as the Mansa Gold Tournament in earlier years. Registration remains open to players of all nationalities, highlighting its inclusive appeal and growing stature in regional women’s tennis.

With a grand prize of 6,000 GHC on offer, the competition promises intense matches and opportunities for local and international talents to showcase their skills.

One of the key organizers, Naa Shika Adu—a prominent figure in Ghanaian sports as the founder of Ace Tennis Ghana and the Africa Sports Alliance—has expressed tremendous enthusiasm about the tournament’s return.

“For the first time, this is going to be a ranking tournament, and it will also help us prepare for the Belgian Cup this year,” she said.

“The Belgian Cup is the female version of the Davis Cup, and this year we have over 43 young ladies who have made it into the main draw,” she added.

She emphasized its broader significance, noting that this year’s edition will serve as valuable preparation for Ghana’s national team ahead of upcoming international commitments, including the Billie Jean King Cup (formerly Fed Cup).

Naa Shika Adu shared details on the strong lineup of participants expected, underscoring the event’s role in promoting women’s tennis, youth development, and gender equity in African sports. Her excitement reflects the tournament’s mission to empower female athletes and reignite passion for the sport in the community after the extended break.
