As Ghanaians anticipate the State of the Nation Address scheduled for Friday, February 27, 2026, security analyst Emmanuel Kwesi Aning has stated that the country’s overall security situation has improved under President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking ahead of the address, Prof. Aning noted that although Ghana remains surrounded by volatile regions, the current administration has strengthened national security management.
According to him, Ghana operates within a high-risk sub-region, with instability in neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and northern parts of Togo posing potential threats. He warned that terrorist and violent extremist groups operating within these areas continue to present risks that require vigilance and coordinated national response.
“We live in a dangerous environment,” he stressed, adding that safeguarding Ghana demands collective effort from both leadership and citizens.
Despite the regional threats, Prof. Aning expressed confidence in Ghana’s preparedness, stating that while security concerns remain real, there is no need for panic. He indicated that the President’s upcoming address should offer clear signals of hope and reassurance to the public.
Prof. Aning further observed that President Mahama’s leadership style is becoming more evident, particularly in the security sector. He pointed out that the President has created space for ministers and security heads to be assertive and decisive in executing their mandates.
He described the current national security approach as less boisterous, less intimidating, and less intrusive — a shift he believes is fostering greater public trust.
According to him, a security system that operates professionally without unnecessary aggression builds confidence among citizens and encourages cooperation with those tasked to protect the nation.
As the country awaits the State of the Nation Address, expectations remain high that the President will outline further strategies to consolidate stability and address emerging regional threats.
