TEMA, Ghana, 21 February: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has welcomed the decision by John Dramani Mahama to sign the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill into law, describing it as a major step toward revitalising local industries and strengthening Ghana’s economy.
According to Mr. Koomson, the core objective of the 24-hour economy policy is to implement practical measures that will enable local industries to grow, expand production, and create sustainable employment opportunities.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, February 21, he said the establishment of the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat is a decision in the right direction and could help prevent the challenges that previously led to the collapse of many local industries in the country.
President Mahama recently assented to the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, paving the way for the full implementation of one of the government’s flagship economic policies. The legislation was approved by Parliament on February 6, following several days of debate after it was laid before the House at the close of 2025.
The newly enacted law establishes a 24-Hour Economy Authority as the central coordinating body responsible for the nationwide rollout of round-the-clock economic activities. The Authority is expected to collaborate with key government institutions, private sector actors, and other stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the policy.
Reacting to the development, Mr. Koomson said the creation of a dedicated institution to oversee the policy is particularly significant because it will provide businesses and industry players with a direct channel to address challenges affecting their operations.
He explained that under the new arrangement, stakeholders would not necessarily need to channel concerns through the Ministry of Trade, but could instead engage directly with the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat for faster resolution of issues.
Mr. Koomson expressed optimism that the initiative, if properly implemented, would stimulate industrial growth, enhance productivity, and contribute significantly to Ghana’s long-term economic transformation.
