Government Spokesperson Hon. Felix Ofosu Kwakye has responded strongly to criticisms following President John Mahama’s 120-day Social Contract speech, particularly on the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Mr. Ofosu Kwakye clarified that President Mahama never promised to completely eradicate galamsey within four months, challenging claims that the former president had set such a timeline.
“Nobody said it anywhere. President Mahama never ascribed a timeline for dealing with galamsey,” he stated. “He never said he will get rid of galamsey in four months because we all know it is an insidious problem that has gone on for years.”
He emphasized that tackling galamsey is a complex and long-term challenge, one that cannot be resolved overnight.
Mr. Ofosu Kwakye cited recent enforcement actions to demonstrate the administration’s seriousness in addressing the issue.
“As we speak, 71 people are in the grips of the law for engaging in galamsey. 150 excavators and other equipment, including pump action guns, have been confiscated by the state,” he disclosed.
He criticized the opposition’s handling of illegal mining, suggesting that government-distributed excavators mysteriously vanished under their watch.
“When they were in power the last time, excavators were given to them — did they not develop wings and fly?” he asked rhetorically, implying mismanagement or corruption.
Government Spokesperson Hon. Felix Ofosu Kwakye also highlighted legislative efforts currently underway to strengthen the legal framework against illegal mining.
“The legislation is being amended in Parliament to deal with the menace,” he said, signaling a multifaceted approach that includes legal, enforcement, and policy measures.
