524 Accidents Cases,844 Persons Involved Recorded First Quarter In 2017

Statistics available indicate that from January 2017 to June 2017,central region had recorded 524 accidents cases with 844 persons been inquired as compare to 369 cases with 531 persons injured last year.

 

In view of that, the Regional Police Commander DCOP Rev David Ampah Bennin urged stakeholders as well as road safety management not to relent in educating the public on issues relating to road safety.

Commander in his further explanation, stressed the need for the public to report any driver found flouting driving regulation to the police for their own safety.

DCOP Bennin gave the advice when he opened a capacity building workshop for Branch Secretaries of Ghana Private Road Transport Union in Cape Coast, organized by Central Regional Secretaries of GPRTU.

The (5)five day training workshop which was attended by over 100 members aimed at building the capacities of key transport administrators to improve upon their performance.

“We are embarking on night snap checks on the Cape Coast- Accra highway to council the recent surge in armed robbery activities on that stretch” he added

He said the central regional police in collaboration with the MTTD National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) have also intensified road safety campaigns in the region.

 

He noted that the campaign involve education of motor riders, drivers, and roads checks and visit to lorry terminal, school, religious organization to help the people put premium of lives to reduce road fatalities.

He attributed the high rate of accident cases in the region to human error, blatant disregard of road traffic regulation, distracted driving, speeding, drink driving, running red light, road pothole and animal crossing among others and therefore advised drivers to be law-abiding and adheres to safety regulation.

In an interview the Regional Chairman of GPRTU Alhaji Rahayianu Shaibu Artey expressed his gratitude to the stakeholders for making the program successful and also urged the participants to apply the lesson acquired to help improve upon the union’s  activities.

He  therefore urged them to be conversant with road traffic regulation and the constitutions of the union to enable them perform their duties effectively.

 

He promised the union’s commitment to continue to partner all relevant stakeholders to address speed related issues to save lives and reduce road crashes and fatalities.
