Morocco coach Walid Regragui Offers Resignation After AFCON Final Defeat to Senegal

Morocco’s head coach Walid Regragui has reportedly offered his resignation following the team’s heartbreaking defeat in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Senegal.

The Atlas Lions, who hosted the tournament and were heavy favorites after their strong run—including reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup under Regragui—lost narrowly by a score of 1-0 after extra time. Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal for Senegal early in the additional period, sealing their second AFCON title.

The final itself was marred by significant controversy and chaos, including a disputed late penalty awarded to Morocco in stoppage time of normal play. Senegal’s players briefly walked off the pitch in protest over the decision (which followed a VAR review), leading to a lengthy delay before the match resumed.

Brahim Díaz then missed the resulting penalty with a Panenka attempt that was saved, pushing the game into extra time. Post-match, Regragui himself described aspects of the events as “shameful” for African football, directing criticism toward Senegal’s coach Pape Thiaw for the walk-off.

The loss appears to have been the tipping point for Regragui, who had previously stated publicly that he would step down if Morocco failed to win the AFCON title.

Reports indicate he feels mentally exhausted after the intense pressure and believes his cycle with the national team has reached its end, despite the contract running through the 2026 World Cup (which Morocco co-hosts alongside the US and Canada).

This development has sent shockwaves through Moroccan football, coming just four months before the global tournament where expectations remain high following the 2022 heroics.

However, the resignation is not yet finalized. Regragui has submitted his offer to step down to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), but the governing body must formally approve it. Some reports suggest the FRMF has denied or refused to immediately accept the resignation, potentially ordering a review of the technical staff’s performance during the tournament before deciding.

If the federation rejects the request or declines to act, Regragui would be required to remain in his position and continue leading the team.

This situation leaves Morocco’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup in a state of uncertainty, with fans and media divided over whether a change in leadership is needed or if continuity under Regragui—who remains a national legend—would better serve the squad moving forward.
