Education Minister Proposes Special Fund for Rebuilding Schools Affected by Disasters

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has proposed the establishment of a Special Education Fund to support the swift reconstruction of school facilities damaged by rainstorms, fire outbreaks, and other disasters.

According to him, such a fund would ensure that affected schools are quickly restored without bureaucratic delays, minimizing disruptions to academic activities.

The minister made this proposal after visiting Labone Senior High School, where a devastating fire recently gutted the girls’ dormitory, leaving many students displaced and causing significant damage to property. Speaking to journalists during the visit, Iddrisu emphasized the urgent need for a proactive approach to dealing with such incidents.

He explained that currently, schools affected by disasters often face long waiting periods for financial support, delaying reconstruction efforts and disrupting learning.

The Special Education Fund, he noted, would be a dedicated financial resource to provide immediate relief and rehabilitation for affected schools across the country.

Iddrisu called on the government, corporate organizations, and philanthropic individuals to support the initiative, stressing that investing in educational infrastructure is critical to ensuring a stable and conducive learning environment for students.

He also assured that the ministry would work closely with stakeholders to develop policies that prioritize school safety and disaster preparedness.
