Ghana is Committed to Security – Interior Minister Assures European Union

The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has reaffirmed Ghana’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding national security and fostering peace. Speaking during a meeting with a European Union (EU) delegation led by its ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Irchad Razaaly, the Minister emphasized that security remains a top priority for the West African nation.

“Ghana takes its security issues seriously, recognizing that a stable environment is essential for national development,” Hon. Muntaka declared. “We will undertake every necessary measure to preserve peace, maintain stability, and create a conducive atmosphere for growth, especially amidst emerging global challenges that threaten regional security.”

The EU delegation’s visit formed part of an evaluation of the EU’s Defence and Security Initiative (EUSDI) in Ghana, which aims to strengthen the country’s security and defence capabilities in response to evolving threats within the Gulf of Guinea region.

Hon. Muntaka expressed appreciation for the EU’s continuous support, acknowledging the critical role of the partnership in tackling insecurity and promoting sustainable peace. He called for enhanced collaboration between the EU and Ghana’s security ministries and agencies to maximize the impact of ongoing initiatives.

“This partnership is vital as it reinforces our shared objectives and aligns with the broader goals of regional stability and peace. Ghana values the EU’s commitment to bolstering our defence capabilities, and we remain resolute in ensuring that the resources and support provided yield tangible outcomes,” the Minister noted.

Addressing Broader Security and Justice System Challenges

In addition to addressing immediate security concerns, the meeting also highlighted the need to improve Ghana’s justice system, particularly focusing on the Ghana Prisons Service. Hon. Muntaka identified prison decongestion and equipment enhancement as key priorities requiring urgent attention.

“Improving conditions within our correctional facilities is integral to ensuring the efficacy of our justice system. By addressing these systemic challenges, we not only enhance the functionality of our prisons but also prioritize rehabilitation efforts, contributing to the overall security landscape,” he said.

Tackling Regional Instability

The EU Security and Defence Initiative (EUSDI) represents a proactive, integrated approach to addressing instability and insecurity within the Gulf of Guinea region. Through targeted support, the initiative aims to fortify Ghana’s ability to respond effectively to security threats while building long-term resilience.

“Such initiatives align with our national priorities and demonstrate a collaborative effort toward achieving sustainable peace in West Africa,” Hon. Muntaka emphasized.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their shared commitment to deepening collaboration in security, defence, and justice reforms, with a focus on creating a stable and secure environment for Ghana and the wider region.
