President Mahama Appoints COP Yohunu as New IGP, Succeeding Dampare

In a landmark move aimed at reinvigorating Ghana’s security architecture, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP). This appointment replaces COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, marking a pivotal shift in the leadership of the Ghana Police Service.

The announcement, dated Thursday, March 13, 2025, was made in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution, following consultations with the Council of State. Signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister for Government Communications, the statement underscores President Mahama’s commitment to fostering a modernized, professional, and effective police force.

COP Yohunu’s Four-Decade Legacy in Policing

With over 40 years of dedicated service, COP Yohunu brings unparalleled experience to his new role. Born on December 27, 1965, he joined the Ghana Police Service as a lance corporal on August 1, 1985. Over the decades, Yohunu has risen steadily through the ranks, earning widespread recognition for his professionalism and strategic leadership.

In his most recent position as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, appointed in 2024 by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Yohunu oversaw critical operational strategies that enhanced public safety. His promotion to Commissioner of Police in January 2016 under Mahama’s first administration further cemented his reputation as a capable and dependable leader in the security sector.

Strategic Leadership in Security Management

COP Yohunu’s career has been marked by significant milestones, including his appointment as Accra Regional Commander in 2013, where he tackled urban security challenges with distinction. Earlier, he served as Director-General of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), implementing reforms that improved road safety nationwide. His tenure as Director-General of Administration further honed his skills in institutional management and governance.

In 2011, Yohunu was awarded the Grand Medal, one of Ghana’s highest civilian honors, for his exceptional contributions to combating armed robbery and other criminal activities. This accolade remains a testament to his unwavering commitment to public safety.

Educational and Professional Excellence

COP Yohunu’s rise to the top of Ghana’s police hierarchy is underpinned by a robust educational foundation. A proud alumnus of the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, he holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Ghana and an Executive MBA in Project Management from the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). This academic grounding complements his practical experience, equipping him to tackle the complex demands of modern law enforcement.

President Mahama’s Vision for Police Reforms

President Mahama’s decision to appoint COP Yohunu signals a renewed focus on police reforms and modernization. As Ghana faces evolving security challenges, including armed robbery, cybercrime, and political violence, Yohunu’s extensive experience and strategic acumen are expected to guide the police service toward enhanced professionalism and public trust.

The transition from Dr. George Akuffo Dampare to COP Yohunu is not merely a change in leadership but a recalibration of priorities. The new IGP is expected to address longstanding issues such as political neutrality within the force, operational efficiency, and the integration of technology into policing.

Challenges and Expectations

COP Yohunu’s appointment comes at a time of heightened public scrutiny and demands for a more accountable police service. While his track record demonstrates a professional approach that transcends partisan politics, maintaining this neutrality in Ghana’s polarized political climate will be a significant test.

The public and stakeholders will be watching closely as COP Yohunu navigates these challenges. His ability to lead with integrity and innovation will be critical in reinforcing the Ghana Police Service as a trusted institution.

A New Era for Ghana’s Police Service

The appointment of COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu heralds a new chapter for Ghana’s law enforcement. His extensive experience, coupled with President Mahama’s vision for a reformed security sector, sets the stage for transformative changes. As Yohunu assumes office, the expectations are high for a more responsive, transparent, and effective police service that meets the needs of a modern Ghana.
