The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi, has criticized the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration under Nana Akufo-Addo for its excessive spending on national events, particularly the 2022 Independence Day celebration in Cape Coast.
Gyamfi revealed that the Akufo-Addo government spent a staggering GH₵10.4 million (104 billion old Ghana cedis) on what was supposed to be a simple March past, describing it as an unnecessary waste of national resources.
“In 2022, we went to Cape Coast for a simple March past, and when we finished, Akufo-Addo told us he had spent GH₵10.4 million! Today, President Mahama has said no—we are in a crisis. He will lead by example. The people voted for him to serve the nation, not to waste the country’s money.”
Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi commended President Mahama for taking a different approach to governance, emphasizing that the current administration is reducing wasteful spending.
He stated that Mahama had significantly cut down the cost of Independence Day celebrations, ensuring that funds are channeled into essential development projects.
“We will not steal because of 6th March celebrations. Those marching under the sun and wasting millions of Ghana cedis, Mahama has canceled it. We are going to do it in a small, cost-effective way, saving the country millions.”
The NDC’s communications officer emphasized that Mahama’s leadership is focused on prudent financial management, ensuring that every cedi is used wisely to benefit Ghanaians rather than being wasted on extravagant state events.
The National Communication Officer Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi concluded by urging Ghanaians to take note of these practical differences in leadership, stressing that Mahama’s policies reflect responsible governance, while the NPP’s past decisions showcased reckless spending.
“These are the real issues that matter,” Gyamfi said, calling on Ghanaians to support Mahama’s vision of financial discipline and national development.
