President Mahama Announces Monthly National Recreation Day to Boost Sports Engagement

In a significant move to promote sports and recreational activities across Ghana, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that a National Recreation Day will be celebrated monthly.

This initiative, highlighted during his State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, aims to emphasize the importance of recreation in the sports landscape and foster community engagement.

During his address to Parliament, President Mahama underscored the need for restructuring the Sports Ministry, which will now be known as the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

“To acknowledge the significance of recreation, we will launch a National Recreation Day. This will be a monthly initiative centered on community engagement, alongside an annual National Recreation Festival,” he stated. These efforts aim to promote active lifestyles, encourage fitness activities, and strengthen community bonds through traditional games.

The announcement comes as Mahama recently appointed Kofi Adams as the new Minister of Sports and Recreation, tasking him with ensuring the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is held accountable for the management of national teams, particularly the Black Stars.
