Cholera Outbreak Hits 20 Districts in Central Region – Health Authorities Move to Contain Spread

A cholera outbreak has been reported in 20 out of the 22 districts in the Central Region, raising serious public health concerns.

The rapid spread of the disease has prompted health authorities to take urgent measures to prevent further infections and contain the outbreak.

Speaking on the situation, the Acting Central Regional Health Director, Dr. Agnes Anane, outlined a series of interventions being implemented to curb the increasing cases.

She emphasized the need for strict hygiene practices, improved sanitation, and immediate medical attention for affected individuals.

“We have activated emergency response teams in all affected districts and are intensifying public education on cholera prevention.

Clean water supply and proper waste disposal are critical at this time to reduce contamination and prevent new infections,” Dr. Anane stated.

Key measures being undertaken include:

Mass public sensitization campaigns on hygiene and safe drinking water.

Distribution of oral rehydration salts (ORS) and other essential medical supplies to health facilities.

Strengthening surveillance and case tracking to identify and treat cases early.

Collaboration with local authorities to improve sanitation in communities, especially in high-risk areas.

Health officials have urged residents to observe proper handwashing practices, avoid consuming contaminated food and water, and report symptoms such as severe diarrhea and dehydration immediately.

The Central Region’s cholera outbreak comes amid concerns over inadequate sanitation infrastructure and poor waste management in some communities. Authorities are working closely with local assemblies to ensure long-term solutions, including improved drainage systems and access to clean drinking water.

As efforts to contain the outbreak continue, Dr. Anane reassured the public that health teams are fully mobilized to prevent further spread and protect lives.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with health directives to bring the situation under control
