Government Committed to Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities – Gender Minister
The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to implementing a Free Tertiary Education Program for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
This initiative aims to promote inclusive education and empower individuals with disabilities through equal access to higher learning opportunities.
Speaking on the policy, Dr. Lartey revealed that the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection has already initiated a series of discussions with the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, to develop comprehensive strategies for the program’s successful implementation.
“The government recognizes the importance of breaking barriers to education for Persons with Disabilities,” Dr. Lartey stated.
“We are working closely with the Ministry of Education to finalize the framework that will ensure a smooth rollout of the initiative.
Our focus is to create an inclusive environment where PWDs can access higher education without financial constraints.”
The Free Tertiary Education Program is expected to cover tuition fees, academic materials, and other essential support services for eligible students with disabilities. Additionally, the policy will incorporate specialized learning facilities, assistive technologies, and scholarship opportunities to enhance accessibility and academic success.
The announcement has been met with optimism from disability rights advocates, who have long called for greater government intervention to address educational inequalities.
Many believe that this program will not only improve the economic prospects of PWDs but also foster a more inclusive society where individuals with disabilities can fully participate in national development.
