National Director of New Patriotic Party (NPP) vigilante group, Delta Force, Mohammed Seidu has said the disbandment of such groups will be detrimental to the country since their existence complement the operations of the police and other security agencies.
He believes that in as much as the disbandment of such groups will be in accordance with the law, he maintains that the peace of the country must be taken into consideration before such a decision is made.
Mohammed Seidu was speaking in an interview at an Edil-fitr dinner organised for members of the Delta Force at Aboabo in Kumasi by himself.
The group in the lead up to the 2016 polls and on the day of voting did a yeo man’s job by providing security for the then largest opposition NPP in its stronghold of Ashanti Region and eventually helped the party to win power.
Delta Force downplays widely held public opinion that the group is violent, adding that members of the group are peace loving people whose mandate is geared towards nation development.
“Some persons commit all sort of crimes in the name of Delta Force when those culprits are not our members. A gentleman recently hit someone with a motorbike and told the police he is a member of Delta Force. When I was contacted and went to see the suspect but it turned out he’s not a member of our group. So we’ve decided that we’ll do ID cards for all the group members who don’t have one yet so that we’re able to distinguish those who are part of the group should any issue come up.”
Eight Delta Force members are standing trial for allegedly storming a Kumasi-based court during a sitting and in the process freed 13 of their members who were earlier charged with conspiracy to assault for vandalizing property at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council and assaulting the Regional Security Coordinator because they were against his appointment.
But group which in recent times has become popular for the wrong reasons, have demonstrated that they can channel their energies to a good course as they’ve embarked on clean up exercises in Kumasi in the Ashanti region.
The group has cleaned Tech roundabout, Sofoline and other areas to ensure a clean environment in the regional capital.
