In a sweeping move, President John Dramani Mahama has revoked the appointments of all Chief Executives for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country.
The decision, which was formally communicated in a letter dated Wednesday, January 8, was signed by Calistus Mahama, the Executive Secretary to the President. The letter outlined the revocation in accordance with the powers granted to the President under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), and its subsequent amendment by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940).
The revocation applies to the following:
Chief Executives of all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies
Assembly Members appointed under the relevant provisions of the Local Governance Act
The letter further directed that, in the interim, the respective Coordinating Directors of the various MMDAs will take on the role of acting Chief Executives until permanent appointments are made.
This bold move by President Mahama is expected to have significant implications for local governance as the country anticipates new leadership at the assembly level.
