President-elect John Dramani Mahama has pledged to leverage Ghana’s historic relationship with the United States to address pressing issues in the country’s energy sector.
He expressed his commitment to deepening ties between the two nations, emphasizing the critical need for collaboration in energy, economic stability, and security.
Speaking at his office during a visit from a U.S. Embassy delegation led by Ambassador Virginia Palmer, who congratulated him on his election victory, Mr. Mahama outlined his vision for a stronger partnership with the U.S. government.
He highlighted the importance of tapping into America’s expertise and technological advantages to resolve Ghana’s energy challenges.
“Our relationship with the United States is historic, and we are committed to deepening those ties,” he said. “This is especially critical now, given the economic and financial challenges Ghana is facing. The energy sector, in particular, requires urgent attention, and with the U.S.’s comparative advantage in technology and knowledge, we hope to work closely to resolve some of the issues in that space.”
The president-elect acknowledged the ongoing energy crisis as a significant obstacle to Ghana’s economic growth and assured the delegation of his administration’s determination to find sustainable solutions.
He stressed that U.S. support in modernizing infrastructure, sharing technology, and enhancing energy efficiency would be pivotal to achieving these goals.
In addition to energy, Mr. Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining Ghana’s long-standing cooperation with the U.S. on security matters.
He highlighted the importance of bolstering resilience in the face of growing regional security threats, particularly in West Africa.
“On the security front, we are fully aware of the challenges in our subregion,” he stated. “The United States has been a steadfast partner in improving our capacity to address these issues, and we look forward to continuing this cooperation under my leadership.”
