“I Charge for Songwriting Because It Takes My Time and Energy” – Kofi Karikari

Ghanaian gospel singer and songwriter Kofi Karikari has stirred conversation after making a bold but honest statement on Ahotor Mmre, hosted by Obaapa Janee.

Speaking candidly on the show, the award-winning gospel musician explained why he charges for songwriting services, clearing the air on a topic that often sparks debate within gospel circles.

“I take money when I write songs for people because it is my time and energy that I spend writing. You are paying for that,” Kofi Karikari stated.

According to him, songwriting is not just about talent—it is a spiritual and personal investment. He revealed that many of his songs come through prayer and fasting, a process that demands sacrifice, discipline, and time.

“I pray and fast to get songs, and it is my time that I’m spending—time I could have used to do other profitable things too,” he added.

Kofi Karikari emphasised that charging for songwriting does not take away from the spiritual value of gospel music. Instead, it recognises the effort, calling, and dedication required to produce songs that minister to lives.

As gospel music continues to evolve, Kofi Karikari’s remarks on Ahotor Mmre have once again highlighted an important truth: purpose and professionalism can coexist.
