On Monday night, Ghana’s president-elect, John Dramani Mahama, addressed the nation in a compelling victory speech, outlining his vision for the country and detailing key priorities for his administration.

Based on results from 267 constituencies, with nine constituencies yet to be declared, Mr. Mahama emerged victorious with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid votes.

He defeated the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).

A Celebration of Mandate and Unity

Speaking from his office in Cantonments, flanked by his wife, Lordina Mahama, and their children, the president-elect expressed profound gratitude to the Ghanaian people for what he called an “outstanding mandate.”

He described the overwhelming support as a testament to the people’s trust in his leadership and their belief in his vision for Ghana’s future.

Mr. Mahama announced plans to inaugurate a joint transitional team with outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.

He commended the outgoing administration for its service and emphasized the importance of a seamless transition in safeguarding Ghana’s democratic legacy.

A Historic Milestone for Gender Equality

A central highlight of his speech was the election of Ghana’s first female Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

Mr. Mahama celebrated this achievement as a historic milestone for gender equality, describing it as an inspiration not only for women in Ghana but across the globe.

He praised Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s dedication and leadership, expressing confidence in her ability to serve as a pillar of his administration.

Building a Ghana That Works for All

In his address, the president-elect emphasized the need for national unity, urging Ghanaians to move beyond political divisions.

“This is not a victory for one party; it is a victory for all Ghanaians. Together, we must build a Ghana that works for everybody and not just a few,” he stated.

Mr. Mahama reiterated his commitment to his flagship 24-Hour Economy Initiative, which aims to create sustainable, well-paying jobs and enhance productivity across sectors.

He also outlined plans to prioritize affordable housing, universal healthcare, food security, and access to clean water.

Restoring Trust and Rebuilding Ghana

Acknowledging the governance challenges of recent years, Mr. Mahama pledged to restore the trust between citizens and leaders, promising a government that listens and responds to the aspirations of the people.

He emphasized transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness as the cornerstones of his administration.

“Ghana is a proud and resilient leader on the world stage,” he remarked, reaffirming the nation’s role as a beacon of hope and inspiration for Africa and beyond.

Call for Peace and Responsibility

Amid reports of isolated vandalism, the president-elect appealed for calm and urged citizens to channel their energies into constructive nation-building efforts.

He condemned acts of violence and emphasized the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding Ghana’s peace and stability.

A Message of Optimism

In closing, Mr. Mahama encouraged Ghanaians to embrace the future with hope and dedication. “Let us be brief in our celebration, for the weight of office will be an onerous one,” he cautioned, underscoring the seriousness of the task ahead.

With a renewed mandate, the president-elect pledged to steer Ghana toward greater heights, fostering a nation where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive.

His speech resonated with a message of unity, progress, and unwavering commitment to the Ghanaian people.
