As the leader of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) observation mission to Ghana, Goodluck Jonathan shared his remarks while speaking to the media after visiting several polling stations in the Greater Accra Region.
During his interactions with the media, the former Nigerian president noted that Ghana’s commitment to democratic principles and the proactive measures taken by stakeholders in the electoral process provided promising indications for the day’s proceedings.
Reflecting on his observations and earlier engagements with key stakeholders, he expressed hope that the elections would be peaceful and transparent throughout the voting period.
Jonathan highlighted the steps taken by the observation mission and other stakeholders to ensure a seamless election.
He disclosed that ahead of the polls, the WAEF and ECOWAS teams, along with other concerned groups, had engaged with Ghana’s National Election Security Taskforce, led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Electoral Commission (EC), political parties, and civil society organizations (CSOs).
“We are very hopeful that the politicians will maintain peace and we have not heard of any untoward behaviour even from the voters or from other people and so we only pray that this is maintained throughout the day, but it is too early to make a concluding statement.”
“We are here to see that there are no crises and if there are issues, we will join the stakeholders in resolving those issues. We were here earlier and met with the National Election Security Taskforce led by the IGP, the Electoral Commission, political parties and CSOs and concerns were raised and all those issues were addressed, and we believe those issues have been addressed.”
