Ghanaian actor Chris Attoh has addressed rumors suggesting that his Western accent is inauthentic. In a recent interview with Joy Prime on November 27, 2024, Attoh clarified that what some perceive as a “fake” accent actually stems from his professional experiences and his desire to represent Ghana on an international stage.
“What people are calling a fake accent is simply my way of showcasing Ghana to the world. Growing up, we were often reprimanded by teachers for not speaking English properly. The moment you speak, you reveal your identity,” he explained. He added that adopting different accents is not inherently negative.
As a Ghanaian working in Hollywood, Attoh emphasized the need to adapt: “It can be challenging, but striving for improvement is necessary.”
Attoh urged his fellow Ghanaians to embrace the idea of learning various accents instead of sticking solely to their native dialects. “It may be tough initially, but you’ll gradually get the hang of it. My accent isn’t fake; rather, it’s something to learn and can be quite beneficial.”
Chris Attoh is recognized for his roles in several films, including “Happiness Is a Four-Letter Word” and “6 Hours to Christmas.”
He has also received significant accolades, such as a nomination for ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ at the 2018 Africa Movie Academy Awards and ‘Best Actor’ at the 2016 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
