The NDC Insight underscores that the 1992 Constitution supports the principle of progressively free education, a vision that was initiated by former President John Dramani Mahama and was under review in 2014. “The current administration’s chaotic implementation of free SHS was merely a desperate attempt to fulfill a campaign promise, resulting in widespread disarray,”.
In light of these revelations, NDC Insight urges President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to acknowledge their failures rather than attempting to mislead the public with false achievements. “Ghana deserves better leadership—one that respects the Constitution and prioritizes the welfare of its citizens, not one that hides behind misleading narratives,” stated Dr. Sorkpah.

NDC Insight Exposes the Reality of “Free SHS”: A Burden on Ghanaian Families
Accra, Ghana – November 15, 2024 – NDC Insight is calling on Ghanaians to critically evaluate the claims surrounding the government’s “Free Senior High School” (SHS) initiative, which, according to the communications officer of NDC Insight, Dr. Anthony Sorkpah, is far from free. Recent investigations have revealed that parents are being coerced into paying between GHC 15,000 to GHC 45,000 for their children to gain admission to SHS, despite their academic qualifications.
Dr. Sorkpah stated, “Our interviews with parents from renowned schools such as Achimota, Labone, and Presec have uncovered a disturbing trend: the so-called free SHS program is merely a facade, allowing the ruling party to extort money from hard-working families. It is appalling that parents must pay substantial amounts before their children can be admitted, even when they excel academically.”
Furthermore, Dr. Sorkpah highlighted that the list of mandatory items parents are required to purchase for their children has grown significantly, with prices quadrupling since 2017. “How can this be labeled as free SHS when families are burdened with exorbitant costs?” he questioned, emphasizing the contradiction inherent in the program.
The NDC Insight underscores that the 1992 Constitution supports the principle of progressively free education, a vision that was initiated by former President John Dramani Mahama and was under review in 2014. “The current administration’s chaotic implementation of free SHS was merely a desperate attempt to fulfill a campaign promise, resulting in widespread disarray,” Dr. Sorkpah added.
Sorkpah.
Additionally, NDC Insight addresses the unfounded rumors suggesting that John Mahama would cancel the free SHS program, labeling them as mere political propaganda from the NPP. “We assure Ghanaians that under John Mahama’s leadership, the free SHS program will not only continue but will be reviewed and corrected to ensure it serves its intended purpose effectively,” Dr. Sorkpah affirmed.
As Ghanaians approach the next election, the choice is clear: a leader who can effectively reset and revitalize our education system, or one who represents a failed administration. “It is time for Ghanaians to choose wisely—John Mahama is the leader our country needs to move forward,” concluded Dr. Sorkpah.
