Kwaku Ansa-Asare, former Director of the Ghana School of Law, has criticized Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, leader of the NPP caucus in parliament, over his recent remarks about the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, amidst the ongoing vacant seat controversy.
Ansa-Asare described the NPP leadership’s behavior as “unparliamentary” and “uncultured,” noting that it was unprecedented for an MP to openly attack the Speaker with disparaging language.
In an interview, Ansa-Asare reflected on the recent parliamentary events that led Speaker Bagbin to indefinitely adjourn the house, highlighting that Afenyo-Markin’s public address was witnessed by a global audience, setting a poor example.
According to Ansa-Asare, a majority leader should handle disagreements with decorum and respect toward the Speaker’s role in parliament.
Ansa-Asare called for Afenyo-Markin to issue a public apology, arguing that his actions have tarnished the parliamentary institution’s image and created a “scar on the conscience of the nation.” He emphasized that a majority leader represents the entire country and must demonstrate statesmanship in his conduct.
