Lawyer Abraham Amaliba, a private legal practitioner and member of the NDC’s communication and legal team, has defended the Speaker of Parliament, stating that the Speaker has the right to speak out if he perceives an attempt by the judiciary or executive to undermine parliament’s authority.
As the head of parliament, Amaliba argued, the Speaker is responsible for safeguarding democracy and should address any actions that threaten it.
Amaliba criticized the leader of the NPP caucus for what he called “immaturity” during the recent parliamentary session, suggesting the NPP leader’s behavior led to unnecessary disruption.
He expressed that the least the NPP could have done was to be present in the chamber, even if there were issues with seating, and address their concerns within parliament rather than through a press conference.
Amaliba urged the NPP parliamentary leadership to adopt a more constructive approach, arguing that their actions are currently not supporting their members or promoting effective parliamentary proceedings in this crucial time.
